NEW ORLEANS - The University of New Orleans women's team is 2-0 for the first time since 2002-03 after defeating Southeastern La. 5-2 on Monday afternoon at the University Tennis Center.
UNO began their day against SLU (1-2) by sweeping three matches to claim the doubles' point.
Outside of a win on the No. 1 court by Cassandra Escobar and Kozue Matsumoto, doubles' play was a fight for the Privateers.
Escobar and Matsumoto, playing together for the first time this dual season, opened with an 8-4 victory over Audrey Cheleni and Margot Dadot.
Trailing 4-0 after getting off to a slow start, Amber Garza and Ceara Howey bounced back for a 9-7 win over Mia Hagiu and Annika Hanke to clinch the doubles' point on court No. 3.
Sofija Karalic and Kristina Martic closed out the doubles' sweep for UNO - the team's first on the season - with a 8-6 decision over Nina Schmeid and Camille Pilon.
Escobar, Garza, Karalic and Martic all improved to 2-0 during the dual season in singles' action as the Privateers won 4 of 6 matches in singles' play against the Lions.
Escobar was a straight sets winner over Schmeid 6-4, 6-1 in the No. 2 spot with Garza winning a first-set tiebreaker on the way to a 7-6 (5), 6-1 result over Hanke.
Martic and Karalic each went three sets after taking the opening set in their matches.
Martic was a 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (2) winner at No. 3 over Pilon with Karalic defeating Hagiu 6-2, 1-6, 6-3.
UNO will seek their third straight win to begin the season on Wednesday as they head to Tulane (2-1) for a 3 p.m. dual.
