NEW ORLEANS - The University of New Orleans baseball team used a six-run fifth inning and held on late to take a marathon 16-15 win over Tulane on Tuesday at Maestri Field.
Nick Schwaner went 2-for-3 with an RBI and four runs scored, and Ryan Eden went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored as UNO (3-5) took the second game of the First NBC Bank Cup.
The hosts got production throughout the lineup. UNO's one through three hitters combined to go 6-for-12 with 10 runs scored, while the next four hitters combined for nine RBIs.
Mats Mattson (1-0) got the win in relief, while Preston Claiborne (0-1) took the loss for Tulane (6-6). UNO won its third straight after starting the year 0-5.
Freshman Brandon Boudreaux went 4-for-6 with two RBIs, and fellow rookie Alex Byo had three hits - including his first career home run. The Green Wave, who scored five runs in the ninth, had 19 hits overall.
Tulane managed to get the tying run on second base in the ninth inning, and Boudreaux laced a single through the left side. But senior Craig Schnell, who entered the game in the eighth inning as a pinch hitter, threw out Tulane's Rob Segedin at the plate to end it.
UNO, which fell 7-1 at Tulane on Feb. 24, jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the second inning. But the Green Wave fought back with four runs in the third and two in the fourth to tie it.
The Privateers rallied with two runs in the fourth and broke it open with six runs in the fifth. Rodarrick Jones provided the big blow with a two-out, three-run double off reliever Drew Zizinia.
The Green Wave used eight pitchers on the night and most struggled. Each of the first six pitchers walked at least one batter and gave up a run.
Tulane pitchers combined to walk eight batters and hit two.
The Privateers, who had not played since Feb. 28, will return to action on Wednesday at McNeese State. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
