NEW ORLEANS - The University of New Orleans men's tennis team won two
matches in a 6-1 loss to UT-San Antonio on Sunday afternoon at the
University Tennis Center.
A day after ending a four-match losing skid, UNO (2-7) found itself back in the loss column by falling to a 6-6 UTSA squad. Injuries continued to put the Privateers in a predicament as the team played without No. 1 player
Vinay Kamineni and No. 3
Benjamin Bouhana, forcing the UNO lineup to play up a spot or two across the board.
Without the two, UNO needed a sweep in doubles' play.
Ben Smith and
Abdelrahman Zaki walked off the court at No. 2 with an 8-2 win over Daniel Moreiras and Pedro Zanotelli to make the No. 1 match for the doubles' point.
Guilherme Rebolo and
Stepan Siska could not close out the doubles' point, falling 8-6 at No. 1 against the Roadrunner pairing of Rodrigo Morgado and Martin Ayala.
In singles' play, UTSA moved one match closer to a dual victory with a walkover win at No. 6 singles. Siska would put UNO on the board with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Tyler Brown at No. 1, with the rest of the wins coming in straight sets for the Roadrunners, who won 4 of 5 contested singles' matches.
The Privateers will have a challenging set of matches this coming week as they face perennial nationally ranked UNC-Wilmington on Thursday with Drake to follow on Friday. Both matches will occur in Wilmington, N.C.
