Baseball Snaps Skid With Win at Southern

BATON ROUGE, La. -- The University of New Orleans baseball team snapped a five-game losing streak with a 13-7 win at Southern on Wednesday.
 
Nolan Church went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored, while Ryan Eden tallied three hits and two RBIs, as the Privateers (4-10) picked up their first road win in four tries.
 
Nick Schwaner and Kyle Maldonado each had two hits and two RBIs for UNO, which had a season-high 19 hits.
 
Sophomore left-hander Justin Cromartie (1-1) was credited with the win, tossing two scoreless innings of relief. The Privateers used five pitchers.
 
Demario Ellis paced Southern (4-8) with three hits, including a three-run home run. Sherrad Brooks (0-2) got the loss, giving up six hits and six runs in 2 1/3 innings.
 
The Privateers raced out to a 6-0 lead thanks to three runs in the second and third innings. After SU cut the lead in half with three runs in the fifth, UNO regained the six-run advantage with another three-spot in the sixth.
 
UNO added another run in the seventh and three in the eighth to break it open.
 
The Privateers will return to Sun Belt play this weekend with a three-game series at Louisiana-Monroe. The series kicks off at 7 p.m. on Friday.
