NEW ORLEANS - The University of New Orleans tennis program lost a pair
of matches on Saturday afternoon as the men fell 4-3 to Marquette and
the women suffered a 5-2 setback against UTEP at the University Tennis
Center.
The UNO men (4-13) lost to a Marquette (15-4) squad that has now won four consecutive matches and was coming off a two-week layoff.
The Golden Eagles swept the three doubles' matches with
Stepan Siska and
Ben Smith falling 9-7 to the top pairing of Jonathan Schwerin and Mark Rutherford. MU claimed the other two doubles' matches by 8-4 results.
In singles' play, UNO put up a valiant effort in splitting six matches. Siska and Smith won at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions, respectively with
Abdelrahman Zaki winning a three-set affair at No. 4.
Siska and Smith each won in straight sets as Siska took a 6-4, 6-4 win over Rutherford and Smith dispatching Otavio Perim 6-1, 6-2. The other winner for the Privateers, Zaki claimed a 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 win over Jose Carlos Gutierrez.
At the end, MU prevailed as Drake Kakar rallied from a set down to defeat
Rohit Chivukula 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 in the decisive match.
The Privateer women (5-12) fell for the fifth straight outing as UTEP (9-13) snapped a four-match skid while also posting their first win in six matches away from El Paso.
The Miners took advantage early as UNO played without
Kozue Matsumoto. Needing just one doubles' match to claim the point, UTEP did one better by winning both contested doubles' matches.
In singles' play, UTEP won 4 of 6 matches.
Cassandra Escobar and
Sofija Karalic were the winners for the Privateers, winning matches at No. 1 and No. 5, respectively.
Escobar rallied from a set down to defeat Dariya Abrakhmanova 4-6, 6-4, 11-9 while Karalic was a straight-set victory over Ximena Fuentes by a 6-2, 6-3 result.
The UNO men will continue their homestand on Sunday at 12 p.m. against Southern Miss while the women are off until an Apr. 17 clash against Xavier at the UTC, which will begin at 12 p.m.
