NEW ORLEANS - Final preparations are underway for the 2010 Sun Belt
Conference Tennis Championships, which will take place Apr. 22-25 at
the University Tennis Center.
The tournament will serve as the first major event at the facility, which recently came under the control of the University of New Orleans athletic department.
To help usher in the re-opening of the facility, UNO is hosting a grand opening event on Friday night at 6 p.m. which will feature special guest Arnie Fielkow, the New Orleans City Council president. The event is open to the community and will feature wine and cheese.
"We are excited about hosting the league championships next week and having council member Fielkow help us get off to a great start at the grand opening," said UNO head tennis coach
Burzis Kanga. "The SBC event will serve as a showcase of the progress that has occurred at the UTC as we re-open the facility to the community."
Kanga is currently overseeing the operations of the 26-court complex, which includes six clay courts, 20 hard courts and a clubhouse that is being renovated ahead of next week's tournament.
"New windscreens will go up at each court," said Kanga. "Additionally, new benches and seating areas will be added to accommodate future events."
Play in the SBC tournament begins at 8 a.m. on Apr. 22 with the tournament coming to a conclusion on Apr. 25 with the women's championship match. The men's championship match will occur on Apr. 24 and admission for the event is free.
