NEW ORLEANS - The season came to an end for the University of New Orleans women's tennis team on Thursday morning in a 4-0 loss to Louisiana-Lafayette in the second round of the Sun Belt Conference Championships at the University Tennis Center.
No. 6 seed ULL (10-9) won for the second time over No. 11 seed UNO (6-13) this year after defeating the Privateers 6-1 earlier this month in Lafayette, La. The Ragin' Cajuns will advance to a Friday morning quarterfinal match against the No. 3 seed Denver.
In doubles' play, the Ragin' Cajuns started off by winning all three matches.
Tara Vasovic and Briggitt Marcovich started play with an 8-4 win at No. 3 over Kristina Martic and Sofija Karalic. ULL clinched the doubles' point with a win by Milou Israel and Audrey Wooland by a score of 8-4 over Amber Garza and Ceara Howey. Mia Gordon and Julie Mazinova wrapped up the sweep with an 8-3 win over the No. 1 Privateer pair of Kozue Matsumoto and Cassandra Escobar.
The Ragin' Cajuns won their three singles' matches at the top positions to rack up the trio of points necessary in closing out the dual.
Marcovich at No. 3 took the first match followed by Mazinova at No. 2 and Wooland at No. 1.
Marcovich claimed a 6-4, 6-1 win over Martic with Mazinova defeating Escobar 6-2, 6-0. Wooland clinched the dual with a 6-3, 6-2 match over Matsumoto, who struggled with an ankle injury suffered after breaking Wooland's serve early in the first set.
The match concludes the second season for the UNO women, who resumed competition in 2008-09. The SBC championships will continue through Sunday with the women's championship match scheduled for a 12 p.m. start on the final day.
