BATON ROUGE, La. -- The University of New Orleans baseball team scored four runs in the final two innings to take a 7-4 upset at No. 15 LSU on Tuesday at Alex Box Stadium.
UNO (11-29) pounded out 14 hits, including a team-best 15th home run from senior Nick Schwaner, as the Privateers snapped a nine-game losing streak.
Rodarrick Jones went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, and Schwaner was one of five Privateers to record two hits, as UNO picked up its first win over a nationally-ranked team this year.
Mats Mattson (3-1) got the win in relief of starter Joe Zimmermann, who shook off a tough 2010 to throw six innings while allowing only three runs. Redshirt freshman Kevin Berry got the final three outs to record his first save.
Jordan Rittner (4-2) took the loss for LSU (32-10), which lost its fourth straight.
The Tigers, the 2009 NCAA national champions, held a 3-1 lead after two innings before the Privateer pitching took over. LSU was held scoreless for the next five innings, and UNO took its first lead of the night on a Jerad Comarda sacrifice fly in the eighth that gave the visitors a 4-3 lead.
Jones made it 5-3 with a two-out RBI single later in the frame before the Tigers cut it to 5-4 in the bottom of the inning on a Mikie Mahtook RBI single. Mahtook finished the night 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs.
The Privateers, though, added two insurance runs in the ninth -- highlighted by an RBI double from Mike Petello and an RBI single from Comarda.
Berry, who relieved Kevin DeGrouttola after the first two LSU hitters reached in the ninth, got Leon Landry to ground into a double play before striking out Matt Gaudet to end it.
The Privateers will return to Maestri Field on Wednesday with a 6:30 p.m. contest against McNeese State.
