Cajuns Rally in the Ninth to Edge UNO

NEW ORLEANS - Louisiana-Lafayette rallied with two runs in the ninth inning to take a 5-4 win at New Orleans on Sunday at Maestri Field.

Alex Fuselier's RBI single broke a 4-4 tie and lifted the Ragin' Cajuns (31-16, 16-8 Sun Belt Conference) to their 12th straight SBC win and a three-game weekend sweep of UNO (11-34, 2-23).

Fuselier, who went 2-for-5 with two RBIs, finished the weekend 8-for-13 with seven RBIs. Chad Keefer homered for the second straight game for ULL, which managed just eight hits.

John Pivach (0-7) took the loss but came up with one of his best games of his UNO career. Pivach, one of 12 players honored during a pregame "Senior Day" ceremony, went eight innings and gave up five runs (four earned).

The hard-throwing right-hander tried to finish the contest but started the ninth with a hit batter and a walk. ULL then moved the runners to second and third on a two-strike sacrifice bunt from pinch-hitter Kyle Bostick.

A sacrifice fly from Lance Marvel tied the game, and Fuselier laced a single through the right side off UNO reliever Mats Mattson to give the Cajuns the lead.

UNO seemed primed to take its Sun Belt home finale after Alan Harris broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the eighth with a solo home run.

Harris, a senior, went 3-for-3 with two RBIs on the day. Mike Petello and Nolan Church also had two hits, and Church scored two runs. The Privateers recorded nine hits overall.

ULL's Dayton Marze (3-3) went six innings in relief of starter Michael Cook to pick up the win. The right-hander surrendered just four hits and two runs (one earned).

UNO will play its final home game of the year at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday against Nicholls State.
