Men's Tennis Cruises Past Alcorn State

LORMAN, Miss. – The New Orleans Privateers men's tennis team sealed the doubles point early and won five singles matches in straight sets to defeat the Alcorn State Braves 6-1 on Friday at the Alcorn Tennis Complex.

Johannes Klein and Samuel Armand continued their strong streak of late in doubles at flight three. The tandem wound up first off the court after putting the finishing touches on a 6-3 win. Mats Westkamp and Misha Fomenkov won their match by two service breaks, defeating the Braves' top tandem 6-2.

Nicolas Kramer continued the momentum for the Privateers in singles with a convincing 6-2, 6-0 win at flight four over Ivan Matas. Westkamp pushed the New Orleans lead to 3-0 with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at flight one.

"We played a good match," said Coach Burzis Kanga. "This is a much improved Alcorn team. Overall, Mats played a good, methodical match. Johannes got challenged in the second set but he responded well and the trickle down effect came in."

The clinching point was earned by Klein who won his first set comfortably at 6-3. The second set went to a tiebreak, but Klein outdueled Gjorgji Popovski to clinch the win in the first of three matches this weekend.

Armand and Odysseas Papaioannou each won their singles matches at flight six and five respectively. Armand breezed past Kareem Bowe 6-0, 6-1. Papaioannou also won in straight sets, taking a 6-2, 6-3 decision over Nuno Rocha.

New Orleans will continue their long weekend when they make the trip to Jackson to face the Jackson State Tigers. The match is slated for a 10 a.m. start.
