NEW ORLEANS – The Privateers shot 60.4 percent overall, but the story was the three-point shooting as New Orleans (15-10, 10-4 Southland) connected on 14 from long distance in the 89-68 rout over Southeastern Louisiana (13-14, 9-5 Southland) Wednesday evening at Lakefront Arena.
UNO shot 60.9 percent from three-point range, led by the sharpshooting duo
Bryson Robinson and
Jorge Rosa, who finished a combined 11-of-16 from deep. Robinson finished with a team-high 23 points and added three dimes and Rosa followed with 18 points. The 14 triples tie for the second most in program history (three other times; last versus Central Arkansas Feb. 18, 2017).
Scott Plaisance Jr. was 6-of-7 for 15 points and
Jahmel Myers came off the bench with 11 points on a perfect 5-for-5 shooting.
Gerrale Gates pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds, the most for the freshman this season. As a team, UNO finished with 20 assists on 29 field goals.
"Our staff did a great job preparing a game plan for a tough Southeastern Louisiana team," said head coach
Mark Slessinger. "Our effort was where it needed to be, and we played well on both ends of the floor. It's a great win for us to remain in contention for a Southland title and now we move on to prepare for McNeese on Saturday."
Robinson and Rosa echoed those statements.
FIRST HALF
Robinson and Rosa combined for nine triples in the opening half and the Privateers shot 56.5 percent from the field to take a 44-31 lead into the break. The 19 points by Robinson and 12 for Rosa highlighted the scorers but New Orleans continued to find the open man with 10 assists on 13 field goals. Robinson was 5-of-7 from the field and 4-of-5 from the line to lead all with 19 and Rosa went 4-of-6 from long distance. Gates posted four points and seven rebounds and capped off the half with a block at the buzzer. Rosser added four assists and two blocks.
Moses Greenwood tried to keep the Lions close with 17 of the clubs 31 points but the three-point shooting gave the Privateers a double-digit lead to offset the 12 offensive boards by Southeastern Louisiana.
Rosa was hot early with back-to-back triples to put UNO up early 6-1 and continued to shoot efficiently from behind-the-arc. An 8-0 run extended the UNO lead to 19-5 and at the under-12 media, the Privateers led 22-12.
Lamont Berzat returned and played four first-half minutes.
SECOND HALF
New Orleans began the half 10-of-11 to extend the lead to 59-36 at the under-16 media. The Privateers continued to excel in all facets, shooting 64 percent in the second half, while the Lions went 12-of-33 from the field and hit just two treys.
The 89-68 win marked the eighth victory for UNO when scoring 80+ points. New Orleans is 8-0 when surpassing the 80-point mark.
