NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers women's tennis team (8-4) outlasted the Florida A&M Rattlers for the doubles point on their way to a 6-1 victory on Sunday afternoon at the University Tennis Center.
Trang Dao and
Ank Vullings got the Privateers off to a fast start in doubles with a 6-1 victory. The Rattlers responded with a 6-3 victory at flight two. That set up the match to decide the first point of the afternoon at flight three.
Claudette Gilhespie, who returned to the lineup, was paired with
Lea Alguacil and the tandem won by a break at 7-5 to secure the first point of the day for New Orleans. From there, the Privateers controlled most of the action in singles.
It started with Alguacil who dominated at flight six for a 6-0, 6-1 victory to put the Privateers ahead 2-0. Dao followed closely behind with a straight set win of her own where she dropped only five games.
Salma Abdelrahim scored a 6-3, 6-2 victory at flight three to give New Orleans the victory.
With the match already in the bag, New Orleans secured two more singles wins.
Brittany Johnson played at flight five and won the first set by two service breaks. Johnson then won the second set 6-4 to take her match. Vullings had to rally back for a thrilling victory at flight one.
Vullings lost the first set 6-3, but came back to win the second set by the same score. In a 10-point tiebreak, Vullings prevailed, winning 10-7 to finish off the day. Florida A&M snagged a win at flight four from Rachel Harden in straight sets.
The Privateers' next scheduled match will be on Friday, Mar. 22 against Marshall at the University Tennis Center. The match will start at 2 p.m.
