Women's Tennis Wins Doubles Point but Falls Short to Bearkats

HUNTSVILLE, Texas – The New Orleans Privateers women's tennis team (7-2, 1-1 SLC) won the doubles point but ultimately fell on the short end of a 4-3 decision to the Sam Houston State Bearkats on Saturday afternoon.

New Orleans jumped out to a 2-0 lead after winning the opening point in doubles and the first match to finish in singles. Trang Dao and Ank Vullings continued their winning ways in doubles with a 6-0 victory at flight one. Later on, Claudette Gilhespie and Lea Alguacil gutted out a 7-5 win at flight three. The Privateers added to their lead when Alguacil won in straight sets (6-2, 6-2).

The Bearkats started the rally from there by winning the next two matches to tie the score at 2-2. Sam Houston State earned straight set wins at flight one and three. A three-set win at flight five for the Bearkats pushed them in front for the first time on the afternoon.

The next point sealed the victory for Sam Houston State. Freshman, Isidora Zivkovic won a tiebreak in the first set of her match at flight two and won the second set 6-4 to earn the victory. The Bearkats went 2-0 in their first conference weekend by also defeating Nicholls on Friday.

Abdelrahim earned the final point of the day at flight four. The freshman won the first set of a three-set bout against Lucia Chobanyan. After dropping the second set 6-2, Abdelrahim came back and won the third set 6-4 to finish the afternoon. The Privateers split their first conference weekend after a Friday win over Stephen F. Austin.

The Privateers' next outing will be when Southland play continues at home. New Orleans will host the Central Arkansas Sugar Bears on Friday, Mar. 8. The match is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start.
