Men's Tennis Earns Doubles Point in Setback vs New Mexico State

NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers men's tennis team (6-9) won the doubles point, but fell short to a furious rally in a 4-3 loss to the New Mexico State Aggies (8-8) on Monday afternoon at the University Tennis Center.

It was a back-and-forth affair in singles, but New Mexico State came back at flight two to preserve the win in their southern road swing. Louis Menard rallied from down 4-0 in the third set and had a hold at deuce when trailing 5-4 to win the match for the Aggies. That came off a 4-3 victory on Sunday against Southern Miss.

The day started with a bang in doubles. Johannes Klein and Samuel Armand got an early advantage to springboard to a 6-3 win. The triumph was their eighth as a team this year. The Privateers were up 4-1 at flight one and 5-2 on flight three and in control.

The Aggies rallied back on both courts, but the doubles point wound up being decided at flight three. Nicolas Kramer and Odysseas Papaioannou ran their winning streak as a duo to five when they held serve for a 6-4 win.

In singles, both teams traded shots. New Mexico State took the first point with a win from Mauri Benitez at flight three. Then Mats Westkamp put the Privateers back ahead with a straight set victory of his own in which he won the last three games of the second set.

The Privateers got their third point from Klein at flight four in straight sets after he won three straight games in both sets to take a 6-4, 6-4 victory. The Aggies came back for a three-set win at flight six to force the deciding match at flight two.

New Orleans next hits the court on Friday, Mar. 29 when they host SMU. The match is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
