Alguacil Wins Deciding Point as Women's Tennis Tops Lamar

NEW ORLEANSLea Alguacil won a third set tiebreaker to decide a thrilling match for the New Orleans Privateers women's tennis team (11-9, 4-5) by a 4-3 score over the Lamar Cardinals on Friday at the University Tennis Center.

Alguacil was pitted against Laura Sola. The sophomore Privateer had to rally back from losing the first set 7-5. Alguacil dominated the second set 6-2 and the third was taken to a tiebreak which Alguacil won 7-4 to give New Orleans their second win of the week.

"This was probably one of the best matches we played this year," said Coach Burzis Kanga. "All three doubles teams played really well and it put us in position to win this match. Lea found a way back from down 5-3 and she played a wonderful tiebreaker to win the deciding match. I think it puts us in a much better position now."

The day started with the Privateers controlling the action in doubles. Salma Abdelrahim and Brittany Johnson were the first off the court with a 6-2 win. Trang Dao and Ank Vullings followed closely behind with a 6-3 win of their own.

Lamar surged ahead after winning the first two singles matches to finish. The Cardinals got straight set wins at flight five and three. New Orleans came back though to get back ahead 3-2.

Dao won her match 6-3, 7-6 for her 49th career singles victory. Vullings followed with a 7-6, 6-4 victory at flight two.

Lamar tied the match at 3-3 with a three-set win at flight four. Amelie Vossgatter won the first set 7-5 then lost the second 6-3. She then took the final set 6-3 to push it to the deciding match at flight six.

The Privateers' next match will be on Sunday against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The match is scheduled for an 11 a.m. start and it will be Senior Day. Trang Dao and Brittany Johnson will be honored before the match.
