HAMMOND, La. –
Salma Abdelrahim held strong in the third set as the New Orleans Privateers women's tennis team (13-9, 6-5) scored a 4-3 win over the Southeastern Lady Lions (7-12, 4-7) on Tuesday at the Southeastern Tennis Complex.
Abdelrahim won the first set against Ximena Yanez but lost the second 7-5. However, the freshman came back to win the final set 6-3 and give New Orleans their fourth straight victory to close the regular season.
Southeastern started the afternoon with the doubles point. Flory Bierma and Katya Cornejo won 6-3 at flight three.
Trang Dao and
Ank Vullings pushed back for the Privateers with a 6-2 win to move their conference mark to 8-3 in doubles. However, Ceci Mercier and Vicky Scholz engineered a 6-3 win for the Lady Lions to put them ahead early.
Mercier pushed the Lady Lions lead to 2-0 with a straight set victory at flight four. Then the Privateers began their climb back.
Lea Alguacil started it off with a dominant win at flight five (6-1, 6-2). Vullings, who went 6-0 last week, had another perfect day with a straight set victory over Scholz at flight two.
Dao later added career singles win number 51 to her total. The senior defeated Putri Insani 6-2, 6-3 to put the Privateers ahead 3-2.
Southeastern forced the match down to the wire with Cornejo at flight six as she won in straight sets. Then Abdelrahim stepped up and finished off the day to give New Orleans their 17
th win in the last 19 meetings against Southeastern.
The Privateers' seed for the conference tournament is still to be determined. The tournament starts on Friday, Apr. 26 in Corpus Christi, Texas.
