NEW ORLEANS – The Privateers men's tennis team (1-1) bounced back from a tough opponent on Sunday in a 7-0 victory over the Prairie View Panthers (0-2) on Tuesday at the University Tennis Center.
DOUBLES
The Privateers played a shorthanded Panthers squad that only had five players, which meant New Orleans already had a leg up in the best of three doubles point.
However, the Panthers withstood a late rally at flight one to take the match 6-4 and force a deciding match over on court two.
Johannes Klein and
Misha Fomenkov were in a battle right down to the wire.
The two sides traded games until the tiebreak loomed at 6-6. Fomenkov and Klein dominated the tiebreak though, posting a 7-2 score to give New Orleans the first point of the afternoon. That vaulted the Privateers into a dominant singles performance.
SINGLES
Klein was first off the court after not dropping a game at flight three. Westkamp soon followed as he scored a convincing 6-1, 6-0 victory. In his third service game of the second set, Westkamp ripped off three service aces.
Max Heinzel won his first collegiate singles match, a 6-0, 6-3 decision to help the Privateers to their first win of the season. Fomenkov and
Malte Steingass also recorded wins at flights two and five respectively.
FROM THE COACH
"We didn't play well in doubles considering they had forfeited at flight three. I think we have to go back and revisit some things but in singles they were methodical and played really well. I thought this was a good Prairie View team and we earned this win. Overall, this is a good start for us."
NEXT UP
The Privateers take on Jackson State on Friday at the University Tennis Center. The match is scheduled for 2 p.m.
