Men's Tennis Defeats Xavier (N.O.) in Home Opener

NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers men's tennis team (1-1) came back from a longer than anticipated break in between matches to score a 5-2 victory over the Xavier Gold Rush (1-4) on Wednesday at the University Tennis Center.
 
LUKE NOTCHES FIRST SINGLES WIN
Luke Joujan, playing at flight six, posted his first collegiate singles win to help the Privateers to a 3-1 lead. Both he and Jered Wilson exchanged service breaks to put the second set score at 5-4. Joujan then sealed the match on a Wilson double fault.
 
TONE SETTERS
Mihajlo Drobnjakovic and Max Heinzel dominated by winning the last five games to take their doubles match at flight three. Espen Lagarde and Austin Vos followed suit with a 6-4 victory at flight one to secure the doubles point.
 
Xavier rallied from an early service break down in flight two as all matches played out.
 
PRIVATEER POINTS
Misha Fomenkov provided the clinching point of the match when he won in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 at flight five. Fomenkov is off to a 2-0 start in singles this season with both wins at flight five.

Heinzel battled back from down a set and endured a grueling tiebreak to defeat Juan Ramirez 2-6, 6-4 7-6 (11-9).

"It was a good and tough win. We played a strong Xavier team. The doubles point was critical and I was pleased because we really played today with a great level of intensity. This team is capable of doing some great things."
 
NEXT UP
The Privateers are scheduled to face Virginia Tech on Mar. 9 at the University Tennis Center. The match is slated for a 2 p.m. start.
