NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers (5-1) quickly rebounded from a tough doubles point in a 4-1 win over the Omaha Mavericks (7-8) on Wednesday afternoon at the University Tennis Center. The Privateers' win streak is now at five straight matches entering their upcoming road conference weekend.
SINGLES HIGHLIGHTS
The Privateers rattled off four straight singles victories to race past the Mavericks on a windy day at the University Tennis Center.
Ank Vullings was the first off court as she ran her winning streak to 21 matches. Vullings posted a 6-1, 6-1 win against Madison Gallegos to get the Privateers on the board.
Flight five and six finished nearly in tandem to give the Privateers a 3-1 edge.
Salma Abdelrahim did not drop a game in the first set of her victory. Abdelrahim continued to put the pressure on and eventually finished off the second set with a service break in hand in a 6-0, 6-3 decision.
Lea Alguacil put the finishing touches on a 2-0 day. After winning at flight two doubles along with Vullings, Alguacil won 6-1, 6-1. In her last two matches, Alguacil has only conceded three games.
The clinching point was won by
Mar Gendra. After battling through a tough first set to win in a tiebreak, Gendra secured another service break to close out the match. A volley at the net that could not be returned finished off a 7-6, 6-2 win to seal the day.
Anastasia Vaganova made her Privateer debut and was early in the third set when the match stopped.
Lina Hohnhold was tied at 2-2 in the third set at flight two.
The Mavericks surged ahead late at flight three in doubles to take the opening point of the day.
FROM COACH KANGA
"We lost the doubles point but we dominated in some ways in singles. Credit goes to all the players. We had difficult conditions and I thought they made the adjustments they had to make."
