Men's Tennis Edges Lamar to Open 2022 Season

BEAUMONT, Texas – The New Orleans Privateers men's tennis team started the season with a grueling match and a narrow 4-3 victory over the Lamar Cardinals on Tuesday afternoon against a former Southland rival.

MARATHON DOUBLES WIN
The Privateers started the day with a gutsy win in doubles. At flight three, Matthew Armbruster and Mihajlo Drobnjakovic easily took care of Arthur Bageaud and Juan Jose Rodriguez by a 6-1 score line. The remaining two matches both went to tiebreaks and both were won by the Privateers.

Marcel Volz and Luke Joujan scored a 7-6 (8-6) win at flight two which earned the Privateers the doubles point. Akos Kotorman and Max Heinzel went on to win their tiebreak 11-9 to sweep the board in doubles.

SINGLES
David Tesic, making his Privateer debut, was a key asset in singles, scoring one of the three points needed by the Privateers to seal the victory. Tesic earned the first set by a service break and prevailed in a tiebreaker in the second set to win 6-4, 7-6.

Dhruv Tangri also had a critical win at flight six for the Privateers. Tangri won the first set against Joshua Taylor, who was a 2019 All-Southland selection. After dropping the second set, Tangri rallied in the third set to win 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.

The Privateers also scored a point from Volz who won at flight one. Volz didn't concede a game in the first set but was broken late in the second set by Filippo Salsini. Volz prevailed in the third set though and notched a 6-0, 5-7, 6-3 win.

Lamar scored straight set wins from Max Amling and Martin Garcia-Ripoll. At flight two, Rodriguez won in three sets.
