NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers men's tennis team moved to 4-0 on the season after breezing to a 7-0 win over the Prairie View A&M Panthers (0-11) on Monday afternoon at the University Tennis Center.
The win vaulted the Privateers to their first 4-0 start since 2009.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Privateers wasted no time getting out of the blocks against the Panthers.
Akos Kotorman and
Espen Lagarde secured a service break to begin the match at flight one and took off from there to a 6-1 victory.
Marcel Volz and
Luke Joujan capped the doubles point with a 6-1 victory of their own at flight two.
Mihajlo Drobnjakovic and
Matthew Armbruster rallied from down a break early for a 6-4 victory of their own at flight three.
SINGLES
Joujan blitzed through his match at flight six without dropping a game to earn the first singles point. Lagarde followed right behind with a straight set victory of his own as he swept through the first set on his way to a 6-0, 6-2 victory.
The match clinching point was earned by
Mihajlo Drobnjakovic who ran through the first set and was up a break early in the second. After Adrien Blackwell broke back to level the score at 3-3, Drobnjakovic responded with a break of his own to the tune of the surrounding tree trimmers.
With the match secured, Kotorman won his bout 6-4, 6-3. Volz pulled away late in the second set of a 6-4, 6-2 win.
David Tesic was left to finish off the clean sweep and he did so with a volley at the net to polish off the win.
FROM COACH KANGA
"I think we did a good job of executing our game plan. There was a little nervous energy but they went out today and performed well. I'm proud of the way they controlled themselves and the focus and commitment is there."
