HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The New Orleans Privateers men's tennis team closed the regular season on a strong note after defeating the Southern Miss Golden Eagles 4-3 on Monday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Privateers scored the doubles point which proved to be critical. With
Marcel Volz out, the lineup had to be shuffled around but the Privateers were resilient in earning the win on the road.
Akos Kotorman and
Espen Lagarde won 6-4 at flight one doubles.
Max Heinzel and
Luke Joujan closed the proceedings on the first point of the day by securing a service break late in a 7-5 win.
In singles, the Privateers got a point from
Matthew Armbruster at flight six. The true freshman coasted to a 6-2, 6-3 win to move the New Orleans lead to 2-0.
The Golden Eagles scored the next two points with straight set victories at flights two and three to level the score at 2-2.
However, it was the Privateers' depth that ultimately won the day. Joujan broke through after winning a tough first set. He won the third set by a double break to take a 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 win.
Kotorman closed it out as he rallied from down a set. After losing the first set 7-5, Kotorman only dropped four games the rest of the way as he won the next two sets 6-1, 6-3.
The day finished with Southern Miss taking flight one after winning a third set tiebreak.
NEXT UP
The Privateers will now prepare for the Southland Championships which start on Friday at the University Tennis Center. Their first opponent will be UIW and first serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
