NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers women's tennis team gave some fierce competition and picked off two singles wins before ultimately falling 5-2 to the Tulane Green Wave on Monday at the City Park Tennis Center.
Raluca Puscas and
Didi Bredberg Canizares each won their respective singles matches to earn points for the Privateers.
Bredberg had to stave off late rallies by Lahara Yelamanchili in each set but she was up to task each time in a 7-6 (4), 6-4 victory. Bredberg held her serve for the match by winning game point at 40-all. She is now 3-0 in singles on the season.
Puscas rallied back from dropping the first set with a late service break in the second against Brooke Theis. That pushed the match to a third set where Puscas had to hold off two break points while serving to stay in the match.
After leveling the score at 5-5, Puscas came back with a spirited break of serve and used that to serve out after the changeover for her fourth win of the season.
The day started with a lively doubles point. Tulane took the match 6-0 on court one but the remaining two matches had little between them.
New Orleans (3-1) gained an early break on court three and continued to hold their own in the most pivotal moments.
Anastassia Kouchnareva and
Ksenia Reznitskaya eventually finished off the match 6-4 in their favor.
It came down to court two which was on serve with Tulane leading 5-4. The Green Wave's tandem of Adelaide Lavery and Jiayun Zhu broke serve on the changeover to seal the doubles point for Tulane to start the day.
Tulane (3-2) picked up singles wins on the first three courts to finish. Tulane's victories at flight two, four and five ensured their win. The remaining three matches were nail biters that went into the early evening hours.
Laurie Barendse was down a set and 5-1 against Kristen Borland. From that point, Barendse showed great poise in ripping off six games in a row to win the second set 7-5. That forced a third set super tiebreak which went to Borland.
