NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers women's tennis team persevered through five three-set matches and two doubles tiebreaks to win 5-2 against the Bryant Bulldogs on Tuesday afternoon at the Privateer Tennis Center.
In doubles, New Orleans swept the board but not without a fight from the Bulldogs. After
Didi Bredberg Canizares and
Raluca Puscas coasted to a 6-0 win at flight two, it was right down to the wire on the surrounding courts.
Tristanne Dechoux and
Laurie Barendse held firm in the tiebreak 7-3 at flight one to clinch the point. At court three,
Anastassia Kouchnareva and
Ksenia Reznitskaya also won a tiebreak 7-4 to finish off the sweep in doubles.
Bredberg quickly put the Privateers ahead 2-0 as she continued her fine singles form. The freshman won 6-1, 6-1 against Sarah Hickey.
The remainder of the matches were closely contested and all went to a third set.
Bryant got a point back when Natalia Vela rallied from a set down at flight two for a 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory to move the Bulldogs within a point. The match was tied after Caitlyn Munson also came back from down a set at flight three.
However, New Orleans held firm in every other match. Dechoux moved the Privateers to the brink of victory when she rallied from a set down to win at flight four.
That win was sealed by
Kateryna Kalistratova who earned the clinching point. Kalistratova controlled her third set as she came back from an early deficit to win 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.
With the match in hand, Puscas added a fifth point. After being on the wrong end of a long first set, Puscas only lost four games the rest of the way in a 5-7, 6-3, 6-1 victory.
