THIBODAUX, La. – The New Orleans Privateers men's tennis team got ahead early and never relented as they opened Southland play with a 7-0 win against the Nicholls Colonels at the Thibodaux Regional Sports Complex on Wednesday afternoon.
New Orleans (6-4, 1-0 SLC) got out to a quick start in doubles.
Matthew Armbruster and
Karim Al-Amin were the first off court with a 6-1 victory at flight three.
The other two courts were closely contested but the Privateers' duo of
Espen Lagarde and
Lilian Dubois held off Harry Collins and Ilian Borlee for a 6-4 victory. The match at flight two was tied at 5-5 when the doubles point was decided.
In singles, the top of the rotation kept the momentum up against Nicholls (5-6, 0-1 SLC). Al-Amin and
Max Heinzel were two of the first three matches to finish. Al-Amin won 6-1, 6-0 and Heinzel scored a 6-3, 6-4 win.
Dubois continued his impressive singles streak with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at flight five. He has now won six straight singles matches and is 7-1 on the year.
Armbruster had to gut out two tough sets but he was more than up to the task against Griffin Babineaux. Armbruster won 7-5, 6-4.
The remaining two matches went to three-set super tiebreaks. Lagarde rallied back from a set down to take the second and win the third 11-9.
Luke Joujan finished the sweep as he notched a 10-8 tiebreak in the third.

The Privateers will head to Rice to participate in the 64
th Ralph O'Connor Rice Invitational. The Privateers will play Samford on Saturday at 1 p.m. and the host Owls on Sunday at 11 a.m.
