NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers men's tennis team clinched at least a share of the regular season championship on Saturday when they scored a 6-1 win over the UIW Cardinals at the Privateer Tennis Center.
It's the second consecutive regular season title for Coach
Burzis Kanga's squad after the Privateers won a share of it in 2022.
The day started with a hard-fought doubles point.
Espen Lagarde and
Lilian Dubois earned a service break in the middle of the set and made it hold on their way to a 6-3 win. The Cardinals got a win at flight three by a 6-2 score.
That left it to flight two where
Max Heinzel and
Luke Joujan gave up an early service break but got it back. After trailing 4-1, Heinzel and Joujan got it to 5-5. They came back from down 40-0 to break serve and held on the changeover without dropping a point.
In singles, New Orleans kept the momentum on their side. Dubois continued on after winning the clinching point on Thursday. He scored a 6-2, 6-2 victory at flight five.
The Privateers won a pair of three-set matches from Lagarde and
Karim Al-Amin. Lagarde won his third set 6-2 while Al-Amin scored a 6-3 decision in his third set.
Joujan persevered in a first set tiebreak on the way to a 7-6 (3), 6-4 victory. Heinzel was in command throughout in a 6-3, 6-2 win.
Noah de Luna won the only point for the Cardinals when he notched a 10-6 third set super tiebreak at flight six.
