LAKE CHARLES – The No. 8 seed University of New Orleans (10-23, 4-14 Southland) fell to the No. 4 seed Lamar University Cardinals (19-13, 13-6 Southland) 71-57 in the quarterfinals of the Southland Conference Tournament on Monday evening in Lake Charles.
Tyson Jackson finished his UNO career with his 46
th double-figure scoring outing after finishing with 10 points, five rebounds and two blocks in 27 minutes of action. The senior was key to UNO's early success on Monday at the Legacy Center making three early buckets in the first quarter.
Turk Vincent and
Khaleb Wilson-Rouse also scored in double-figures for New Orleans with 10 points each. Vincent made 4-of-6 shots and notched the 20
th double-figure scoring outing of his career on Monday afternoon. Wilson-Rouse also scored 10 points while pulling down a team high six rebounds. It was his 27
th game in double figures at UNO.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Leading by nine at the break Lamar stretched its lead to double-figures. New Orleans got as close as six twice in the second half – first after a layup by Vincent made it 40-34 with 14:45 to play, and then a few minutes layer when James Glisson made a rare foray into the post and scored to make it 42-36 with just over 13 minutes to play. New Orleans would get no closer than seven the rest of the way.
New Orleans got off to a solid start attacking the Cardinals in the paint. Early buckets inside from
Tyson Jackson and
Jah Short got New Orleans off to an 11-4 lead with eight of those early points coming in the paint.
After starting the game an ice cold 2-of-11 from the floor Lamar found some success as the half went on. Spurred on by nine offensive boards in the first half, the Cardinals eventually tied the took their first lead when B.B. Knight knocked down their only three point basket of the first half from NBA range with just under 10 minutes to play, 16-14.
Khaleb Wilson-Rouse responded on the other end with a jumper tying the contest at 16.
A layup by
Tyson Jackson cut the Lamar advantage to a single point, 24-23, with 4:26 to play in the first half, before a 10-2 Cardinal run capped by a turnaround fadeaway from Cody Pennebaker gave the opposition a 34-25 lead at the break.
INSIDE THE BOX
- The Privateers had three score in double-figures (Jackson, Vincent, Wilson-Rouse) for the 19
th time this season. New Orleans was 7-12 in those games in 2023-2024.
- One day after scoring 34 points during the upset of SLU,
Jordan Johnson finished with seven points on three made baskets. The senior ends his collegiate career with 1,524 total points – 17.1 points per game over his 89 games at Denver and New Orleans.
- Lamar forced scored 15 points off of 12 New Orleans turnovers with 13 of those coming on fast breaks to help them pull away in the second half.
