SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The New Orleans Privateers women's tennis team scored a huge win on the road by a 5-2 score over the UIW Cardinals on Monday afternoon behind a solid team effort at the Mabry Tennis Center.
The UIW men defeated the Privateer men by a 5-2 score line on the day.
WOMEN'S RECAP
The Privateers had to rally after losing the doubles point. UIW won at flight one 6-3 and scored a 6-1 victory at flight two in order to take the opening point of the day. However, the Privateers fought back and won five singles matches to take the day over.
The five and six line was especially dominant.
Ksenia Reznitskaya only lost six games on her way to a 6-3, 6-3 decision. At flight six,
Audelia Morin Kougoucheff only conceded two games in a 6-1, 6-1 decision.
At flight three,
Tristanne Dechoux earned a hard-fought victory in both sets. She outlasted Isid Hernandez Leon 7-5, 6-4.
At the top of the rotation, both Laurie Barednse and
Anastassia Kouchnareva won three-set matches to seal the Privateers' victory. Kouchnareva won the first set and pulled through in the third for a 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 decision.
With the match decided in the Privateers' favor, Barendse went down to the wire with Sofia Franco Salcedo. Barendse won the first set 7-5. After Salcedo took the second set 6-3, Barendse played relentless tennis until the end in a 7-6 (9) tiebreak in the third set.
MEN'S RECAP
Marcel Volz and
Joseph Townes both earned singles wins but the Cardinals had a strong performance in doubles to set the tone on the day as they won 5-2 against New Orleans.
Flight one doubles was played by Joao Sasso and Jose Garmendia. The pair did not lose a game in their victory. At flight three, the Cardinals also won 6-3. A tiebreak in the second flight ensured they swept the doubles point.
Volz earned a single break of separation in each of his sets during a 6-4, 6-4 victory. At flight six, Townes rallied from a set down to overwhelm Pietro Perego 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.
However, the Cardinals won the remaining singles matches in straight sets. Garmendia won his match 6-1, 6-2 at flight four. Emilio Vila won 6-3, 6-4 at flight two. Noah De Luna won 6-3, 6-2 at flight five and Tomas Reche won a long second set to take a 6-2, 7-5 decision at flight three.
