SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The New Orleans Privateers women's tennis team put up a battle but their season was ended at the hands of the UIW Cardinals by a 4-1 score line on Friday afternoon at the McFarlin Tennis Center.
The doubles point saw the Privateers'
Laurie Barendse and
Ksenia Reznitskaya dominate once again. The duo asserted themselves early and coasted to a 6-1 win at flight two doubles to get the Privateers the first match.
However, UIW rallied to score the first point after Lyric Bonilla and Jordyn Isaak notched a 6-2 win at flight three. It all came down to flight one. Isid Hernandez and Sofia Salcedo saved two break points that would have gotten the match back on serve and they won 6-4 at flight one to secure the doubles point.
UIW built a 3-0 lead behind Hernandez's win at flight three and Ine Lamprecht's 6-3, 6-2 decision at flight four.
The Privateers got on the board when Reznitskaya rallied from down a break in the second set. Reznitskaya dominated the first set and came back in the second for a 6-1, 7-5 decision to start the comeback attempt for the Privateers.
Barendse,
Anastassia Kouchnareva and
Audelia Morin Kougoucheff all won their second sets after losing the first on their courts. Kouchnareva was battling severe cramps throughout the third set though and Estefania Gonzalez of UIW came through for the match clinching point to send the Cardinals to the semi-finals against A&M-Corpus Christi.
The season ends with an 8-9 overall record and a four-game improvement in the conference slate from 2023 to this season. New Orleans won one conference game in '23 but upped that total to five this year.
