NEW ORLEANS – The UIW Cardinals (10-11, 3-7 Southland) started hot early in the first half and pulled away from the University of New Orleans Privateers (4-17, 2-8 Southland), winning 74-58 on Monday evening at Lakefront Arena.
UIW used a 14-0 run over nearly seven minutes in the first half to extend a 16-11 lead at the 12:17 mark to a 30-11 advantage at the 6:56 mark. During the run, the Cardinals made six of nine shots while the Privateers missed all seven of theirs.
Four Privateers scored in double figures.
James White led the way with 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting and added five rebounds.
Jah Short contributed 13 points and six assists, marking his fifth game with five or more assists since transitioning to point guard seven games ago.
MJ Thomas and Turk Vincent each scored 10 points, with Thomas adding six rebounds and Vincent recording five.
Leland Coleman played a career-high 21 minutes off the bench and set career highs with five points and four rebounds.
Jordan Pyke led the Cardinals with 15 points and eight rebounds. Dylan Hayman added 14 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists. Davion Bailey contributed 14 points and two steals, while Jayden Williams rounded out UIW's double-digit scorers with 14 points on 7-of-8 shooting.
The Cardinals shot 50.8% from the field, compared to the Privateers' 41.1%. UIW also outrebounded UNO 41-31 and outscored the Privateers 44-34 in the paint.
New Orleans heads to Hammond, La. on Saturday to face the Southeastern Lions. Tipoff from the University Center is set for 3:30 p.m., with the game airing on ESPN+ and The Ticket 106.1 FM. The Lions defeated the Privateers 91-71 at Lakefront Arena on Jan. 11.
