Privateers Fall in Heartbreaking Overtime Buzzer Beater to Stephen F. Austin

NEW ORLEANS – A pulsating contest saw the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks escape after a buzzer beater three from beyond halfcourt as they defeated the New Orleans Privateers 88-85 in overtime on Monday night at Lakefront Arena.

With the Privateers down three in the waning seconds, JR Jacobs was isolated on the left wing and drilled his first three-pointer of the night to tie the game at 85-85 and the game seemed destined for at least five more minutes.

However, Matt Hayman caught the inbound pass, took one dribble and launched a three from beyond halfcourt to secure the Lumberjacks' third conference victory of the season.

New Orleans had the lead for most of the contest as they were ahead for 38:11 of the 45 minutes played. The Privateers were in front by 11 with just over two minutes left in regulation, but the Lumberjacks started a fierce run that included making their last four shots from the field.

With the Privateers clinging to a 74-72 advantage, a foul was called on the home side with 2.3 seconds remaining. Chrishawn Christmas made the first free throw for the visitors, but missed the second. A lane violation was called on New Orleans though giving Christmas another try, which he made to tie the score at 74-74 and send it to overtime.

Kohen Rowbatham had a career night with his highest point total (28) on 11-of-20 from the field. Jacobs had 16 assists, two shy of tying the single game program record.

The Privateers had 20 assists on 32 made field goals and shot 56.1 percent from the field, their best field goal percentage of the season. That narrowly surpassed the 56 percent they shot against East Texas A&M on Jan. 8.

Keon Thompson led the Lumberjacks with 23 points, five rebounds and five assists. Hayman finished with 19 points.

INSIDE THE BOX
Three Privateers (Rowbatham, Jacobs and Leland Coleman) played all 45 minutes. Coleman notched his first career double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Theo Grant was a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line and chipped in with 18 points.

The Privateers will travel to Houston to take on the HCU Huskies on Saturday. Tip is slated for 3:30 p.m.
