Kouchnareva, Sprengers Rally to Singles Wins but Privateers Fall in Southland Opener

NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers women's tennis team saw two players rally from a set down to win their singles matches but it wasn't enough as the Northwestern State Lady Demons won 4-3 on Saturday at the Privateer Tennis Center.

Anastassia Kouchnareva and Fleur Sprengers were all down a set, but all three bounced back to win their singles matches on the day.

Kouchnareva was down a set after dropping the opener 6-3 to Honoka Umeda, but she came back with double breaks in both of the remaining sets. She only lost four games in the remaining two sets of the match.

Sprengers lost out by a single service break in the opening set against Tjasa Klevisar, but came back to take the next two sets 6-4, 6-3.

Kateryna Kalistratova provided the other point for the Privateers after she won a third set tiebreak against Zoe Spyrou. Kalistratova won 6-1, 5-7, 7-6 (5) at flight two.

The Lady Demons secured the opening point of the day though as they won 6-4 at flight one and 6-3 at flight three in doubles. Marina Farina rallied from a set down to win 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 and the Lady Demons' flight five and six players lost a combined two games as they both won in straight sets.

"I thought we had our opportunities today," said Coach Burzis Kanga. "Losing the doubles point came back to haunt us. It was a loss today, but I'm proud of the way we competed against this team. We were head-to-head with them throughout most of the lineup."
