Women's Tennis Plays Intense Doubles Point in Loss to Southeastern at Southland Tournament

THIBODAUX, La. – The New Orleans Privateers women's tennis team's season came to a close on Tuesday when they were defeated 4-0 by the Southeastern Lions in the first round of the Southland Tournament.

It was an intense doubles point that commenced after a long lightning delay pushed the original start time of the match back nearly three hours.

Southeastern got a 6-1 win at flight one but Fleur Sprengers and Nouray Khaled countered by winning the first three games on their way to a 6-3 victory at flight two. That brought the first point down to a deciding match at flight three.

Iris Danne and Ananya Dhankhar were locked in a grueling battle with Taisia Bolsova and Claudia Di Leonardo that eventually got to a tiebreak. The Privateers got a mini break on two separate occasions but Southeastern's duo rallied from 5-4 down to take the tiebreak 7-5 and the first point.

That momentum sustained for Southeastern into singles.

Bolsova only dropped two games on her way to a 6-0, 6-2 win as she was first off the court. Bente Bierma followed closely behind as she engineered a 6-3, 6-2 victory to put Southeastern on the brink of victory.

That was achieved when Leana Gomez took the first set by a double break and got out to a sizable early lead in the second set of a 6-2, 6-2 victory.

Sprengers won her first set 7-5 and was early in the second set. Kateryna Kalistratova also took her first set 6-2. Khaled was down a set but up a break at 3-1 in the second when the match was completed.
