LAKE CHARLES, La. – The New Orleans Privateers played a hotly contested doubles point that they fell on the short end of in a 6-1 loss to the McNeese Cowgirls on Monday at the Nancy Hank Tennis Center.
The top two flights in doubles both went to a tiebreak.
Fleur Sprengers and
Nouray Khaled gutted through their tiebreak 7-3 to force a deciding match at the top flight. Anstassia Kouchnareva and
Kateryna Kalistratova were resilient down to the end, but McNeese's duo of Stella Rundova and Salome Fluri squeaked by 8-6 in a tiebreak.
The Cowgirls won their match 6-2 at flight three to start the action in doubles.
Singles play saw the Cowgirls win five matches in straight sets. Rundova only lost one game in a 6-1, 6-0 victory at flight six. Fluri followed with a 6-1, 6-2 win at flight one to push the Cowgirls to a 3-0 lead.
The match was secured when Elena Morales won her first set by a double break and carried that momentum to the second set in a 6-2, 6-3 decision. McNeese also got wins at flight two from Erica Hagi (7-5, 6-1) and at flight four from Alexa Martinez (6-3, 6-1).
The Privateers' lone point came from Sprengers who won her first set against Ana Hollweg 6-3. After Hollweg took the second set to force a 10-point tiebreak, it was Sprengers who prevailed 10-6. With the win, Sprengers is now 10-4 overall and 5-2 against Southland opponents.
