Men's Tennis Season Ends After Battle Against Mississippi State in Opening Round of NCAA Tournament

STARKVILLE, Miss. – The New Orleans Privateers men's tennis team played their final match of a fantastic season as they lost 4-0 to the Mississippi State Bulldogs on Friday at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre.

The Bulldogs (23-5) began the day by taking the doubles point on the first two courts. Petar Jovanovic and Benito Sanchez Martinez, the top ranked doubles team in the nation, won 6-2 at flight one.

Mississippi State also got a 6-2 win from their 60th ranked duo of Niccolo Baroni and Mario Martinez Serrano to earn the first point of the day.

Singles started outdoors, but the match was moved inside when inclement weather came through the area.

Once inside, the Bulldogs completed their matches at flight one and six. Sanchez Martinez, ranked #28 in the singles rankings, only conceded one game in a 6-0, 6-1 victory. Serrano also won 6-0, 6-2 to put the Bulldogs on the brink of victory.

That was achieved when Barroni got an early break in the second set and used that momentum to take five of the last six games in the second set on his way to a 6-2, 6-2 victory that sent the Bulldogs to the second round.

The Privateers battled throughout the afternoon and the unfinished matches were firmly in the balance.

Matthew Armbruster was serving for a 2-1 lead in the third set. He took the opening set 6-4 against #67 Jovanovic. David Tesic and Sep de Visser came up on the short end of first set tiebreaks, but continued to push their opponents to the limit as they were both in the second set when the match was stopped.

New Orleans finished their season with a 15-8 mark after their second NCAA Tournament appearance in school history.
