HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The New Orleans Privateers men's tennis team had two singles matches stretch to three sets but wound up on the wrong side of both in a 6-1 loss to the Southern Miss Golden Eagles on Friday afternoon.
The Golden Eagles got out to a quick start with a pair of 6-2 victories in doubles. Kale Mize and
Jay Temming had a 6-2 decision at flight one. Ollie Noltorp and Ritabrata Sarkar followed with a similar score line at flight three to give Southern Miss the first point of the day.
When it broke into singles,
Evgenios Vasilakis was one of the first singles matches to finish and it notched the first point for the Privateers. Vasilakis only conceded three games in a 6-2, 6-1 win against Temming at flight five.
Southern Miss won the other three matches in straight sets to help seal the victory. Mize won 6-2, 6-2 at flight one. Sarkar won 6-4, 6-1 at flight six and Noltorp notched a 6-1, 6-3 victory at flight four.
The other two matches to finish had razor thin margins between both players.
Carlos Melgosa won a second set tiebreaker to take his match to the third at flight three but Saheb Sodhi won the deciding set 6-4.
Beltran Fernandez dominated the first set but Jose Murariu took the second by a single break. With the match decided, the two players were engaged in a 10-point tiebreak that went down to the wire. Murariu won the tiebreak 11-9 to finish the day for Southern Miss.
