NEW ORLEANS –
Fleur Sprengers and
Kateryna Kalistratova both notched singles victories as the New Orleans Privateers lost 5-2 to the McNeese Cowgirls on Monday morning at the Privateer Tennis Center.
Sprengers broke the serve of reigning Southland Player of the Year, Salome Fluri late in the first set to take it 6-4 and used that momentum to race to a 4-1 second set lead. Fluri narrowed the gap to 4-3, but Sprengers countered by breaking Fluri's serve again accompanied by a hold of her own to close out a straight set victory.
Sprengers dealt Fluri just her fifth career loss and Fleur moved her own record to 13-1 on the season.
Kalistratova carried to another three-set victory after rallying to defeat Alexa Martinez. After losing the first set, Kalistratova took the second 6-4. In a 10-point tiebreak in the third set, Kalistratova surged late, taking six of the last nine points to win the tiebreak 10-6.
Kalistratova is now 11-2 on the season and picked up her 31
st career singles victory.
McNeese had the match clinched after a doubles point that saw their flight two pair recover from a service break down. Fluri and Erica Hagi won six of their last seven games to take the match 6-3 and secure the first point of the day.
Sprengers and
Danique Vermue raced to a 5-0 lead for the Privateers and won 6-3 at flight one. Ana Hollweg and Naomi Hagi won 6-2 for McNeese at flight three.
The Cowgirls won all of their matches at flights three through six.
