Men's Tennis Ends Season With Win at Nicholls, Women's Tennis Makes Tournament Despite Loss

THIBODAUX, La. – The New Orleans Privateers men's team finished their season on a high note with a 4-0 victory over the Nicholls Colonels on Thursday at the Thibodaux Regional Sports Complex.

The women's team lost 6-1 to the Colonels but have still made the tournament as the 8-seed following a Lamar loss to Northwestern State.

MEN'S RECAP
The doubles point went back and forth between the two sides as two of the three courts went to tiebreaks. That was after the tandem of Beltran Fernandez and Carlos Melgosa dominated flight two with a 6-2 victory.

Marius Gyllerup and Jerall Yasin paired up at flight three and the duo held strong through their tiebreak to win 7-6 (3) which gave the Privateers the doubles point. Nicholls won the tiebreak at flight one 7-2.

In singles, the Privateers controlled the action between flights five and six early. Peter Kieslinger coasted to a 6-3, 6-1 victory while Evgenios Vasilakis notched a 6-1, 6-3 victory.

The clinching point was scored by Fernandez who won 6-3, 6-3 against Colin Tavares. It was Fernandez's first singles win at flight one in his second match at that spot in the lineup.

New Orleans was up a set in two of the remaining three matches.

WOMEN'S RECAP
The Privateers suffered a 6-1 defeat at the hands of the Colonels but will be making the trip to Beaumont to face the 1-seed McNeese.

Ananya Dhankhar and Kateryna Kalistratova scored a victory in a tiebreak at flight two but the opening point had already been decided. The difference was at flight three when Julia Bordiginon and Jada Iverson won their tiebreak 7-4.

Kalistratova provided the only point for the Privateers on the day. The senior controlled the first set throughout against Aada Inna and held on in a second set tiebreak to take a 6-2, 7-6 (5) decision to finish her regular season at 13-2 overall (6-1 against Southland opponents).

Nicholls won every remaining singles match and won both three-set affairs. Noemie Piquet took her third set 6-3 at flight three. Amal Grube Anderson won her third set 6-0 at flight six.

The Privateers' first round match against McNeese is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Sunday, Apr. 19.
