SPORTS MEDICINE INFORMATION

OUR STAFF
OUR MISSION
The University of New Orleans Sports Medicine Department serves and supports each student-athlete, and the University of New Orleans as a whole, by working collaboratively with a variety of healthcare professionals to provide the most comprehensive and evidence-based healthcare practices, while maintaining the highest level of professionalism and integrity.

ABOUT US
Athletic trainers are healthcare professionals who collaborate with physicians, and other healthcare professionals, to optimize the activity and participation of patients and clients. Athletic training encompasses the prevention, recognition, examination, evaluation, rehabilitation, and management of injuries and illnesses sustained while participating in physical activity by determining history, symptoms, and any other pertinent medical information relating to the injury or illness. Athletic trainers are responsible for providing emergency care and acute care, first aid, and initial treatment for an injury and illness which may include, but is not limited to, immobilizing, casting, splinting, or bracing for treatment or preventative purposes. Additionally, athletic trainers aid in determining safe levels of participation by monitoring playing surface conditions, weather conditions, or other environmental hazards which may render physical activity unsafe.

Athletic trainers specialize in the planning, administration, evaluation, and modification of injury prevention and risk management programs for athletic injuries. Athletic trainers are also skilled in rehabilitating and physically reconditioning injury and illness with the use of heat, cold, water, light, sound, electricity, passive or active massage, mechanical devices, or any other approved therapeutic modality. Under the direction of a supervising physician, athletic trainers administer over-the-counter and prescription medication. The University of New Orleans Sports Medicine department is comprised of nationally certified and state-licensed athletic trainers who are employed full-time through the Ochsner Sports Medicine athletic training outreach program.  Ochsner's outreach program provides coverage for professional teams as well as various high school and university athletic programs throughout the greater New Orleans area.
