The University of New Orleans Tennis program hit another milestone in Coach Jim Hunter's career as for the first time in Privateer history both men's and women's teams were nationally ranked and both teams had players nationally ranked. The Privateer men are ranked #73 while the women are ranked #75 by the March 12th ITA rankings.
Head Coach Jim Hunter, along with assistants Malik Tabet and Domonic Modise, has had a milestone month. First gaining his 200th career victory as an NCAA men's tennis head coach and his 150th career victory at UNO in the win over Jackson State. New Orleans becomes one of only three schools, Old Dominion and Virginia Commonwealth, to be coached by one coach and be nationally ranked in both men's and women's tennis.
The University of New Orleans women's team (11-1, 4-0) is ranked #75, their thirtieth consecutive week in the rankings dating back to March 10, 2001. The Privateer also boast two individual rankings for the first time this season. Inge Veerman, now 10-0 in singles play this season, is ranked 99th. Laetitia Zembski, 7-1 at the number two singles position, is ranked #115.
The Privateer men (10-4, 1-0) are ranked #73 after knocking off Colorado and placing fourth at the HEB Invitational last weekend. This is the first time this season the men have been ranked. Viktor Loven, 11-2 in dual play this season, is ranked #54. He has had wins over Chistopher Burgeous (#88) of Texas A&M Corpus Christi and is undefeated in Conference play. Loven is also the number two Sun Belt Conference men's ranked player behind Daniel Klementz of Middle Tennessee.
The Privateer tennis teams return to action with the men playing Florida A&M and the women playing Nicholls State Thursday March 13th, at 2:00 p.m. on the Lakefront courts.
