Right-handed pitcher Alex Smith has been named UNOPrivateers.com Student-Athlete of the Week.
This past week, Smith allowed a single earned run over 17 innings for UNO to produce a 1-0 record over three appearances and a 0.53 ERA.
The highlight of Smith’s week came this past Sunday when he hurled a complete game against the nation’s top offense in Georgia State. GSU entered the weekend leading the nation in multiple offensive categories including batting average and on-base percentage.
Smith scattered five hits and allowed a single earned run in ending the Panthers’ eight-game hitting streak while picking up UNO’s first complete game of the season. At one point in the contest, the right-handed pitcher had induced several straight ground outs, allowing the Privateers a chance to seize the lead and end a five-game skid.
The complete game came two days after Smith pitched a scoreless 11
th in relief for UNO against GSU in the series opener.  Smith began his week by throwing seven scoreless frames against Southern Miss. The right-handed pitcher exited that contest with a 1-0 lead and received no decision. All three appearances on the week occurred at Wesley Barrow Stadium.
In addition to UNOPrivateers.com Student-Athlete of the Week, Smith has been nominated for Louisiana Sports Writers Association (LSWA) Pitcher of the Week, in addition to weekly honors from College Baseball News and College Baseball Insider, amongst others.
