Box Score NEW ORLEANS ? Bo McCalebb scored a game-high 20 points and T.J. Worley had a double-double as New Orleans topped Savannah State 71-56 on Saturday.
Worley came off the bench with 14 points and a game-high 10 rebounds, while Shaun Reynolds added 10 points to help UNO (7-1) and head coach Joe Pasternack to its best eight-game start ever under a first-year head coach.
The two teams combined for 52 fouls and 52 turnovers, though UNO scored 28 points off 29 Tiger miscues. SSU (6-8) managed just 16 points off 23 Privateer turnovers.
James Parlow also tied Tory Walker for the UNO all-time record for career 3-pointers with 177. He did struggle from the field, going 2-of-9 (1-of-6 behind the arc). UNO shot just 42 percent as a team and 20 percent from the 3-point line.
Chris Linton led SSU with 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting. The Tigers, who had 14 players see action, were whistled for 32 fouls.
UNO broke the game open with a 19-5 run starting at the 17:34 mark of the second half. The spurt helped UNO stretch a 34-33 lead to 53-38 with 8:40 to play.
The two teams combined for 27 turnovers in the first half, with UNO committing 14 miscues. McCalebb led the Privateers with 10 points on 5-of-9 shooting. Neither team got in a flow thanks to the turnovers and 21 fouls.
UNO, which led 34-27 at halftime, never trailed after the 7:37 mark of the first half.
UNO will be back in action at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, kicking off the three-day Mississippi Gulf Coast Classic against Southern Mississippi in Biloxi.
