MONROE, La. - The University of New Orleans volleyball team got off to
a slow start, before bouncing back with authority in a 3-2 win (22-25,
25-27, 25-10, 25-14, 15-7) over Louisiana-Monroe on Tuesday night.
UNO (18-9, 11-5 SBC) received double-digit kills from
Dobrilla Kovacevic,
Lindsey Loyd and
Maria Szivos in the match. Kovacevic, who sat out the opening frame had 18 kills in four sets of action. Loyd and Szivos added 16 and 10, respectively.
Cassidy Asebroek had a career-high 44 assists for the Privateers after coming off the bench for
Jaci Bayley, who added another 11 assists.
Nicky Valenti had 24 digs in the match while Loyd completed a double-double performance with 12 of her own.
Mari O'Neal topped ULM (1-29, 0-16 SBC) in kills with 16. Mahogany Dilonga added another eight for the Warhawks while Helen Theisen set up the offense with 39 assists. Christy Tribble and Ashley Bland each had double-digit dig totals with 15 and 10, respectively.
The two teams went back and forth in the opening set until a tie at 18. At that point, the Warhawks dictated the tone the rest of the set, scoring three straight points to take a lead that would be relinquished in a 25-22 ULM win.
Kovacevic made her first appearance of the match in the second set and had two early kills to give the Privateers a 6-2 lead. The lead quickly faded as ULM went on a 5-1 run to knot the score and then grabbed a two-point advantage at 12-10.
UNO followed with a side out and preceded to add four straight points on Loyd's serve for a 15-12 lead. The Privateers would not let the Warhawks get infront again until a 3-0 run late in the set gave the host team set point at 24-23.
Two consecutive Dilonga attack errors put UNO at set point. A Privateer service error followed and two UNO attack errors later, ULM was ahead 2-0 heading into the break after a 27-25 victory in the second stanza.
The Privateer offense arrived in the third set, scoring 10 straight points early in the frame to push the UNO advantage to 15-4. The lead would eventually grow to 15 in a 25-10 third set win.
In the fourth set, the Warhawks scored five straight after the Privateers had won the first point of the frame. Needing just one more set to take the match, the momentum was on the side ULM until two UNO runs changed things dramatically.
Down 8-4, UNO scored six straight and then with a two point lead at 15-13, the Privateers went on an 8-0 run to put the set out of reach as UNO won 25-14.
The Privateers were not interested in any final set drama. The team scored 4 of 5 to open the frame, capped by a Loyd service ace. Szivos had three aces during the set including two in a row at one point while Valenti added another two as the Sun Belt's top serving team scored six of the team's first 10 points in the set on aces.
The lead would hold up til the end as UNO closed the set on back-to-back kills from Loyd and Asebroek for a 15-7 final frame victory.
The Privateers will wrap up their regular season with matches on Thursday against Louisiana-Lafayete at 7 p.m and Saturday at 12 p.m against ULM. Both contests will take place at the Human Performance Center and streamed online at UNOPrivateers.com
