Privateer Volleyball Reaches New Heights in 2008

NEW ORLEANS - The University of New Orleans volleyball team had one of the most successful seasons in program history at the Division I level in 2008 and will look to add another successful season to their count when they hit the court again in 2009.

Second-year head coach Jozsef Forman directed the team within one win over reaching the NCAA tournament, after the team had a memorable weekend at the Sun Belt Conference volleyball tournament. The team seeded fourth, defeated fifth-seeded UALR 3-1 in the opening round before winning their first semifinal match since 2000 with a 3-0 sweep of top-seed and tournament host Florida International.

The victory over the Golden Panthers put the Privateers in a regionally-televised volleyball match against sixth-seeded Western Kentucky, where the team ended up on the wrong side of a 3-0 score.

“I could not be more proud than I was after this season," said Forman. “The team worked well together through challenging and supporting each other. They continued to improve throughout the season and I was very happy that they finished as the runner-up in the conference tournament."

While short of their team's goal, both Dobrilla Kovacevic and Lindsey Loyd were named to the all-tournament team, the first since 2000 that two UNO players were on the unit.

Kovacevic and Loyd were no strangers to accolades throughout the season. Kovacevic, an outside hitter from Belgrade, Serbia was named to the SBC and All-Louisiana first-team. The designations were the second for the senior, who was named to both first-team units in 2006.

On the season, Kovacevic ranked 27th in the nation in kills per set (4.12) while ending her career ranked fifth in kills, kills per game and service aces. She also finished fourth in aces per game, sixth in digs per game and eighth in digs.
