NEW ORLEANS ? University of New Orleans senior guard Bo McCalebb has been named the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Player of the Year for the second straight season, it was announced late Saturday.
McCalebb averaged a Sun Belt Conference-best 23.2 points per game and became the league's all-time leading scorer in January. He also became the first player in school history to be named the Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Year after averaging more than two steals per contest.
He becomes the first player in Privateer history to be a two-time recipient of the state's top honor.
The New Orleans native scored 30 points or more four times ? including a season-best 33 on two occasions. He finished his career ranked 21st on the NCAA Division I scoring list with 2,679 points.
McCalebb was also named to the All-Louisiana first team, joining LSU's Anthony Randolph and Marcus Thornton, LSU-Shreveport's Josh Porter and Tulane's David Gomez.
UNO junior forward Kyndall Dykes was a third-team selection after averaging 13.6 points and a team-best 5.3 rebounds per game. Another New Orleans product, Dykes had a season-high 23 points on Jan. 2 against Arkansas-Little Rock.
He averaged 16 points in the first three games of 2007-08, helping UNO to a 3-0 start.
Thornton was named the state's Newcomer of the Year, while Randolph was the Freshman of the Year. LSU-Shreveport's Chad McDowell was named the Coach of the Year after guiding the Pilots to a 31-3 record.
