NEW ORLEANS - Billy Humphrey scored 23 points, and the University of New Orleans out-rebounded a team for the first time this year in a 67-55 win over visiting Texas State on Saturday afternoon at Lakefront Arena.
Humphrey, who scored a career-high 26 points in Thursday's win over Southern-New Orleans, was 6-for-13 from the field and 9-for-10 from the free-throw line. The senior transfer from Georgia also had three steals and three assists.
Reserve guard Devin McDonald added 11 points, and freshman Carl Blair had 10 rebounds and eight assists.
Blair helped UNO (2-1) enjoy a 42-40 rebounding edge. It was quite a turnaround for the Privateers, who were out-rebounded by eight boards per game in their first two contests.
Tony Bishop led Texas State (1-3) with 16 points, and Cameron Johnson had 12 points off the bench. The Bobcats, who had averaged 82 points per game in its first three contests, shot 29 percent from the field.
Texas State shot just 25 percent in the first half.
UNO was also cold early, making just two of their first 14 shots to start the game. The Privateers were down 12-8 with 10:53 remaining before finally getting hot.
UNO went on a 13-1 run, including three consecutive 3-pointers from Charles Carmouche, Humphrey and McDonald.
The Privateers never trailed again, as Texas State struggled from the field all afternoon. The Bobcats were just 3-for-16 from 3-point range.
"That is the way we are going to have to defend and rebound if we want to win," said UNO head coach Joe Pasternack. "Texas State can score the basketball, so for us to hold them to 55 points is huge."
UNO will host NAIA-member Mobile at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
