NEW ORLEANS - North Texas held University of New Orleans guard Jada
Frazier to just two points after she scored 29 points in the previous
meeting as the Mean Green snapped the Lady Privateers' three-game home
win streak with a 62-52 victory on Wednesday night.
Brittney James had a double-double for NT (9-15, 5-8 Sun Belt), scoring 15 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Jo Hall and Amber Jackson added another 14 and 12 points, respectively as the Mean Green avenged an earlier loss to UNO.
The Lady Privateers (12-13, 7-7 SBC) received double-double efforts from both
Candice McGee and
Ty Felder. McGee grabbed a career-high 18 rebounds to add to her 15 points while Felder scored 14 points and pulled down 11 rebounds.
Brittany Helm topped all scorers with 16 points.
UNO pulled within one point at 31-30 early in the second half before NT reeled off six straight points and 9 of 10 to take a game-high nine-point lead at 40-31.
The earlier shooting woes returned in the second half for the Lady Privateers, who shot 6 of 23 after the break as the Mean Green gained a 12 point lead with 4:54 remaining in the contest.
All UNO could muster down the stretch was pulling with eight points as head coach
Amy Champion's squad was forced to foul in the final 30 seconds of play.
The Mean Green went into the half up 30-26, but it was not without an effort from the Lady Privateer.
Hall had the hot hand early for NT, making 3 of 4 attempts from the field as the Mean Green opened the scoring 10-2.
The Lady Privateers played the role of polar opposite. After a McGee lay-up with 19:32 left in the opening half on the first UNO shot, the team missed their next 14 shots from the field.
Felder ended the shooting struggle with a made basket from the field at the 11:20 mark, part of 10 straight Lady Privateer points in a row for the senior guard as UNO would get within two points of the Mean Green twice prior to the break.
The Lady Privateers will fly to Denver on Friday morning ahead of a Saturday afternoon contest at 2 p.m. CT against the Pioneers. The game will be available online via UNO Vision and on WGSO 990 AM.
