Troy Hits Four Home Runs in Sunday Win at UNO

NEW ORLEANS ? Troy exploded for 16 runs during a four-inning stretch in taking a 19-8 win at New Orleans on a cloudless Sunday afternoon at Maestri Field.

The Trojans (15-10, 4-5 Sun Belt Conference) hit four home runs ? including two from second baseman Trevor Tyre ? to grab its first SBC series of the season.

Tyre and Chad Watson combined for five hits and eight RBIs, and Brett Henry went 2-for-5 with a two-run home run, as Troy tallied 17 hits.

UNO (9-16, 4-8 Sun Belt) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, but the Trojans rallied for five runs off Privateer starter Cory Myers (1-3) in the second and never looked back.

Troy added four runs in the third inning and put it away with five runs in the fifth. The Trojans invoked the 10-run mercy rule by scoring three runs in the eighth.

The Privateers, whose bullpen combined to throw 13 2/3 innings in a doubleheader on Saturday, were forced to use six relievers in the final 6 1/3 innings. The bullpen allowed 14 runs and 13 hits.

The defense also struggled ? committing a season-high five errors.

“We can't expect to win a series when two of our three starting pitchers struggle like ours did this weekend,” said UNO head coach Tom Walter. “That's not to single those guys out, because we struggled in a lot of areas, but with a limited roster, it really hurts us.”

Drew Hull (2-2) got the win in relief of Troy starter Travis Burge, who only retired one batter. Hull gave up four runs but ate 3 2/3 innings and collected four strikeouts while benefiting from the Troy offense.

UNO's Nick Schwaner continued his hot week, hitting a home run in his fourth consecutive game. The Slidell product hit a three-run home run in the third inning to help cap off an 11-RBI week.

Jay Morris went 2-for-3 with three runs scored, and Nick Mitchell provided a two-run double. UNO scored the eight runs despite just seven hits.

UNO will play at Nicholls State on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
