NEW ORLEANS - A short-handed University of New Orleans women's tennis
team was no match for Troy on Sunday, falling 6-1 to the Trojans at the
University Tennis Center.
Playing without two players in the lineup, UNO (2-5) conceded matches
at the No. 5 and No. 6 singles' courts, in addition to the No. 3
doubles' match, before the dual started. The automatic losses at the
three courts gave Troy (3-7) a 2-0 advantage and placed the visiting
Trojans within one doubles' match of taking the doubles' point.
Troy clinched the doubles' point by sweeping the two matches contested.
Leonie Guijt and Karoline Grymel defeated
Cassandra Escobar and
Amber Garza 8-3 at No. 1 with Lauren Simpson and Emma Smith rolling to an 8-4
win over
Kristina Martic at No. 2.
Garza ended up the lone winner for the Privateers in the dual,
defeating Gabriella Veiga 6-3, 3-6, 10-6 in the No. 3 singles' match.
The appearance at No. 3 was the first this year for Garza, who has
appeared at No. 4 and No. 5 in every other dual this year.
In the remaining three singles' matches, UNO fell in straight sets with
Karalic's 6-3, 7-5 loss at No. 4 to Smith ranking as the closest defeat for the hosts.
UNO will play three matches next weekend, starting with duals in
Hattiesburg, Miss. against Houston and UALR on Saturday, before
returning home to challenge Kansas on Sunday at 12 p.m.
