ULM Defeats Privateers 16-15 Behind Late Inning Rally

MONROE, La. - ULM rallied for six runs over the final two innings to defeat the University of New Orleans 16-15 on Sunday afternoon at Warhawk Field.

Trailing 15-13 as they came up to bat in the ninth inning, ULM (9-10, 3-3 Sun Belt) right fielder Kelvin York doubled down the left field line for his fourth hit of the day to score two teammates that reached scoring position on a Kevin DeGrouttola wild pitch.

DeGrouttola (0-2) gave up three runs on two hits in the final frame, walking two along the way to help ULM's cause as UNO (5-12, 1-5 SBC) fell in an opposing team's final at-bat in a league game for the third time in five conference losses.

The Privateers had scored a run in each of the first six innings to build up a 13-10 lead. After UNO scored two in the eight, ULM tallied three runs of their own before Ricky Ott relieved Joe Zimmermann. Ott, making his first appearance of the season, retired three straight to keep the visiting team ahead entering the last inning.

Michael Petello was 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBIs to lead the UNO offense, which accounted for 27 runs over the last two days. Nolan Church added four runs and belted a lead-off home run in the sixth as part of a 2-for-4 effort. Kevin Berry contributed two hits for the Privateers.

Though the Privateers were able to score at least a run in the first six innings, ULM was able to take an early 8-4 advantage after two innings. The Privateers recovered with four runs in the third to knot the score at eight, before moving ahead until the ninth inning with two additional runs in the fourth.

Josh Gill (1-0) took the win for ULM, pitching 1.1 innings, allowing just one run while striking out two. York and Judd Edwards each went 4-for-6 to pace the Warhawks. York, who who never scored a run, tallied seven RBIs with Edwards scoring four runs.

UNO will play Tulane at Turchin Stadium at 6 p.m. on Tuesday for the right to hold the First NBC Bank Cup for the year. The teams have split the previous two games in the three-game series with the Privateers claiming the most recent contest, a 16-15 victory at Maestri Field on Mar. 9.
